I feel most inspired when I’m in an urban environment. I love walking around busy cities and noticing interesting architecture and typography on buildings. I’m really into checking out different storefronts, seeing the colors and patterns used for the various installations.
How would you describe your personal style?
I’d describe my personal style as fresh, modern, and simple. I love the idea of adding visual interest to an otherwise simple style. This ties into my home decor, clothing style, and photography in a way that I almost always choose the simple over the busy.
I often laugh when someone uses the word “artist” to describe me, mostly because I associate a lot of confidence and perfection to that word, which is so different from my experience with creativity. I love experimenting with everything, from the way light can be used to photograph subjects to putting together different colors and shapes to form patterns on paper. I think people shy away from art because they think creating is about a polished end product, but really it’s about staying curious and not being afraid to make a mess.
My most prized possessions are my family photo albums. From my wedding album to our yearly photo books. They are reminders of what matters most. I love the sense of time I get from looking at the albums and the appreciation they give me for life. It also helps me do my best work when photographing people and events, knowing how I depict it will be how it is remembered.
I scrimp on cars (buying used, keeping for a solid 10 years) and groceries. I am a budget-shopper for sure and get a kick out of finding off-brands that taste just as good as their rivals.
On what items do you splurge?
I splurge on furniture or decor that can double as the key pieces that tie a whole room together. If I find something that is unique and can serve as an inspiration piece for the rest of the room, I can’t pass it up.
Homes are beautiful when they are interesting and unique, whether that be via the decor or architecture. I love seeing people add personality to their homes and not being afraid to try out different styles.
California is my top travel destination. My husband and I drove a convertible up and down the Pacific Highway and it will forever be my favorite trip. If I can have the ocean and mountains together with mild weather, I’m a super happy camper.
