Inspired by the personality and legacy of its owners,
Together with architects
Located in Melbourne’s Toorak, Arno Residence is anchored both front and rear yard ends with a unique architectural element. Vertical support structures between the inside and outside have been framed with clean black metal linework, varying in thickness to create a sense of hierarchy. Internally, the use of the rich and dark timber flooring throughout is cooled with the minimal use of a palette in whites and greys.
Throughout each of the spaces a relationship with the exterior binds the outside to the inside. In particular, the introduction of natural light to Arno Residence was key. Most notably the rear skylight acts as a sliver of what is to come to the expansive backyard the rear. Acting as both an architectural element and a way to integrate the interior experience, it adds a sculptural element to the space.
Custom joinery hides a collection of integrated storage efforts throughout Arno Residence, while the lightweight framing of glass doors and custom display shelving elements adds pockets for expression. With a South African heritage, the owner wanted to showcase this throughout the two-storey home.
Through the layering of texture, monochromatic patterns, interesting tactile hardware and pockets of colour, there is a mixed sense of heritage, industrial and contemporary charm throughout. Arno Residence cleverly fuses old and new and through a muted and grounding palette, furniture and decorative items have become the hero expression and introducing the client’s personality. The team at Adele Bates have brought together an eclectic sense of colour and vitality and created a home that epitomises an enviable urban retreat.
