Home Design 3D allows users to easily create, design, furnish and decorate detailed floor plans in both 2D and 3D from scratch. You can personalize your design and ultimately can get a visualization of your finished space through a photo-realistic 3D rendering, making your design and remodeling as intuitive as it’s effective. I felt compelled to give it a go.

How Do I Get Started?

Getting started with Home Design 3D is pretty straightforward, as you can simply download the app for free with no sign up or registration required. Upon opening up the app, you are directed to the aesthetically pleasing and easy-to-use interface of projects catalog. You may go through the templates to get a feel for the tools, or create a new project and jump right in.

However, it’s worth mentioning that while there are many options in the freemium version, it will encourage you to make an in-app purchase of the full version to access extra projects, or even save your project to come back to it later.

Furnish Your Home

After I selected the ‘Family House’ template, I decided it was time for decoration. At this point, there was a good range of furniture items available in the catalog to try out different looks for the space by superimposing real products — 3D models of various furniture, fixtures, and so on — onto the template of your room. What was most annoying, however, were some of the in-app ads that you may click on when trying to navigate the catalog as I wasn’t ready to purchase the full app at that point.

When entering the dimensions of the room, users can try out different room planning ideas by editing any object’s position. But more than that, you can adapt its size and color, so it’s much more flexible with the sort of thing you actually want. You can play around by adding in decor bits and pieces, and designing the floor pattern too. The brand say there are more than 1,500 pieces of furniture and hundreds of textures to choose from, too — and I’ll have to take their word for it as I didn’t count them all!

Adding the Fixtures

In real life it’s costly to move the windows a little to the left, but in Home Design 3D it was fun to move around the doors, windows and shaping wall partitions to my desire. To get stuck in on that, I just opened the ‘Architecture’ part of the menu and selected the ‘Windows’ category. To choose a window, double tap to preview, and then select the window category to replace windows on the walls.

Augmented Reality?

One of the app’s features is its Augmented Reality, superimposing computer-generated images on top of your actual home. This would be great to try out, but unavailable on Android so I didn’t get to try this feature and can’t say whether it’s good or not.

However what I do like is the way that the catalog contains 3D and true-to-scale models, so that sofas, armchairs, coffee tables and all of that, give you an accurate impression of the furniture’s size, design and functionality.

Cross-Platform Compatibility

Thanks to its cross-platform compatibility, you can export and share your projects to other devices, or even sending it to your email address so you can use your finished designs outside the app. What should be reviewed however is the fiddly nature of trying to do such large-scale modeling on your phone — the screen size was uncomfortable and it could be frustrating to have to tap and drag if you’re looking for finesse, so in that sense a tablet or on desktop would be better.

Making it Really 3D

One of the app’s most striking features is the way it pitches itself as “the first consumer interior design app to offer the possibility to get a 3D printed model of your home.” What that means is getting to actually take the project you’ve designed from digital into reality.

Final Thoughts

Home Decor App Review: Home Design 3D |

With Home Design 3D available, home design lovers are given more choice to preview how certain furniture, decorations and color schemes would work in their homes. I think the idea of creating a visual true-to-scale blueprint of your home before making the trek down to the store is a welcome one. It’s a fun little play tool but it is a bit fiddly on a phone. Still, I will keep this in mind for my next project!
