Le Corbusier. Frank Lloyd Wright. Charlotte Perriand. Franco Albini. If you’re passionate about design, chances are these names are more than familiar to you. And they should be – these names are responsible for some of the most recognised designs around the world.
These names, and a host of other classic and contemporary visionaries, are also behind pieces from iconic design brand Cassina, recently returned to Space for an exciting new era. In their 90 year history Cassina have produced some of the world’s most iconic furniture creations, from pioneering collaborations with architects and designers to their continued innovation and research today. To celebrate Cassina’s return to Space, we explore the highlights and history of the collection.
A SPONSORED FEATURE
A crown jewel in Cassina’s history is the I Maestri Collection – you know, the designs from Le Corbusier, Gerrit T. Rietveld and E. Gunnar Asplund (to name a few). Over the years this collection has consistently delivered modern classics, from theLC5 Sofa Le Corbusier designed with Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand for his living room in Paris to Frank Lloyd Wright’s 606 Barrel Chair, as striking today as it was on debut in the 1930s.
With such an extensive collection of classics you might think the contemporary pieces would be overshadowed – but under the guidance of the inimitable Patricia Urquiola as artistic director Cassina’s recent collections are as innovative as their predecessors. We’ve only just admired Urquiola’s work on boutique hotel Giulia (featuring many custom pieces from Cassina) and her passion for exploring cultural background, heritage and history through design is again clear in her artistic direction for Cassina.
Just as the historic collections defined the leading architects of their time, the Contempoeranei collections include global names like Mario Bellini, Zaha Hadid, Philippe Starck and Urquiola herself. We’ve always been particularly enamoured with the 241 Prive sofa designed by Starck, while Urquiola’s debut collection last year won us over with its nod to the brands past while exploring new elements and shapes (and of course, the Gender armchair!)
With over 90 years of iconic design to explore, the return of Cassina to space is a chance to rediscover timeless pieces from the brands, and unearth new classics from the next generation of designers.
