Melbourne’s unique ‘Filigree’ style of architecture stemmed from the Victorian period, signified by its wrought iron balcony and veranda. Falling under this unique architectural style is the Albert Park terrace, whose ornate, laced cast-iron façade and tessellated tiles also gave away its need for some serious design consideration and restoration. Pushing practicality to the front, Golden elongated the floor plan from the formal lounge to private dining, while giving the home a ‘contemporary heart’; a new open-plan kitchen and living area to the rear of the ground floor that involved the considered removal of multiple walls. Carefully adhering to the heritage impact statement, Golden ensured the preservation of its marble fireplaces, timber work, ceiling roses and cornices – demonstrating their sincere appreciation for the home’s historic significance.
The shared spaces really come to life thanks to the safeguarded character of the heritage detail and the iconic new design features. The master suite is at a gold standard, achieved through clever spatial planning around two heritage-protected fireplaces and consideration for the archways, architraves and skirting. Working around the fireplaces, multiple walls were removed and reinstated to create an expansive walk-in-robe and ‘hotel-like open-plan suite’.
