One of Melbourne’s most significant heritage-listed homes needed the Golden touch – who have delivered no less, in their elegantly modern intervention.

Melbourne’s unique ‘Filigree’ style of architecture stemmed from the Victorian period, signified by its wrought iron balcony and veranda. Falling under this unique architectural style is the Albert Park terrace, whose ornate, laced cast-iron façade and tessellated tiles also gave away its need for some serious design consideration and restoration. Enter local studio Golden, who injected their playful, modern approach within for a ‘confident and layered interior, grounded by a deep respect for its 125-year history’. Working meticulously to the heritage requirements of the home, Golden has revealed a grandiose atmosphere reflective of the home’s heritage pedigree.

As mapped out in our chat with the co-founders of the studio Kylie Dorotic and Alicia McKimm, their golden rule is producing an interior driven by one big idea, derived from a combination of factors. In Kylie’s own words, the Golden focus is “to produce interiors that are timeless, high quality, holistic, functional and beautifully detailed.” In the Albert Park Residence Golden have done exactly that, bringing their contemporary style to create a stylish and functional heritage home.

Pushing practicality to the front, Golden elongated the floor plan from the formal lounge to private dining, while giving the home a ‘contemporary heart’; a new open-plan kitchen and living area to the rear of the ground floor that involved the considered removal of multiple walls. Carefully adhering to the heritage impact statement, Golden ensured the preservation of its marble fireplaces, timber work, ceiling roses and cornices – demonstrating their sincere appreciation for the home’s historic significance.

The shared spaces really come to life thanks to the safeguarded character of the heritage detail and the iconic new design features. To sew the spaces together, Golden chose a robust, masculine palette of timber veneer, Baltic pine, leathered granite and metal detailing. The feature lighting includes the instantly recognisable Cloud Chandeliers by Apparatus, adjacent in the formal lounge and dining through the arched doorway. In the entryway, you’re also greeted with an Italian icon – the Marble & Murano glass lamp from Castorina & Co – and a vintage pendant over the staircase.

Golden reflected the client’s contemporary taste and love of entertaining in their eclectic furnishing choices. Take the Beetle Dining Chairs in the formal dining zone and the formal lounge where a cosy Tired Man chair and footstool by Flemming Lassen and Nepal Armchair in bluestone sit atop of a custom rug from Halcyon Lake. In the open plan living another Nepal Armchair sits with the turmeric yellow Edra Standard Sofa from Space Furniture and sculptural pieces like the Gold Bash Vessel by Tom Dixon. A standout selection of art includes the Architectural Fossil 2 and Fossil 3 by Melanie Upton from Pieces of Eight Gallery and Tom Polo’s work on the mantle piece in the formal dining room, ‘Your cosmic stomp, my fatal flaw’.

The master suite is at a gold standard, achieved through clever spatial planning around two heritage-protected fireplaces and consideration for the archways, architraves and skirting. Working around the fireplaces, multiple walls were removed and reinstated to create an expansive walk-in-robe and ‘hotel-like open-plan suite’. There’s a clear Italian influence here, with the ‘Spicchio’ Floor Lamp by Stilnovo, 1973, Italy from Castorina & Co and ‘Ciprea’ armchair by Alfra and Tobia Scarpa, 1970 also from Castorina & Co.

All thanks to a diligent design team, this Albert Park Residence has been returned to its golden age in a totally new and exciting era of design.
