The 50’s and 60’s have always been popular in terms of design, a lot of key pieces and famous elements date back to these two decades. Think in terms of designers like Gerrit Rietveld and Frank Lloyd Wright and you should remember a certain contemporary feel these designers left in the world. So it’s no surprise, that collecting vintage items from there eras has been the favourite activity of a multitude of people. However, most of these pieces are quite expensive so not everyone was able to spice up their interior with some vintage retro glam.

Thankfully, new designers seemed to offer a solution for this particular issue and started doing the once unimaginable: redesigning existing models in order to make this particular trend affordable for everyone. And why not? Most well-known pop songs are covered endlessly; same goes for a lot of movies. So it’s only logical someone, at some point, came up with the idea to remake famous furniture pieces as well.

A trip down memory lane: modern retro design

Chain store versus unique design

Now when we say affordable, we do not necessarily mean cheap. Everyone knows the handful of particular chain stores which are based all over the world, offering the same generic furniture at a low price for everyone. Let’s get one thing straight though; this is not a bad thing, since everyone should be able to furnish their house with new furniture instead of buying everything at a thrift shop, or not being able to buy anything at all. But if you’re looking for items that are somewhat more unique, these chain stores are definitely not the place for you.

Instead, you can choose form a plethora of unique and modern web shops nowadays that offer a nice selection of contemporary furniture and key pieces, made by new up-and-coming designers. These items don’t come with the same hefty price tag you’d expect from an authentic vintage piece, but nevertheless offer the same exclusive look and feel. The quality of these designs is usually top-notch, as well as the quality of the materials and fabrics used. You can expect to enjoy these items for a long time; they don’t break or tear up as easily as their cheaper cousins from previously mentioned chain store.
