Some people are just not afraid of getting stuck in. For new owner and interior designer, Megan Myers, stumbling across this very original beach shack in Coastal Victoria was going to mean just that. With ocean views, whales passing by, and only a ramble to the local beach, she leapt at the chance to put her heart and soul into the renovation.
Formerly a nun’s retreat, this mid-century home really was a sign of the times, with external walls clad in asbestos and classic bathroom cubicle amenities. Megan’s unmistakable love of Australian and mid-century architecture, and the authentic ‘beach shack’, notably shines through in the completed transformation.

Due to the fall of the land and various height restrictions, the new design sees the house split over three levels. To maximise sea views the kitchen, dining and living are all positioned at the highest viewpoint, the master with bathroom and bedrooms below, and a kid’s retreat and garage at sub floor. Red Ironbark timber features on the exterior complement the coastal environment, and fresh white painted bargeboards and eaves paired with chalky white brick also provide variation and diversity.
The coastal sea breeze and view captured from the kitchen and dining generate a natural calm within. A grey Muuto hovers heartily above the dining table and blends with the soft grey and white vertical shiplap lined walls and oak engineered floorboards. Crisp white shiplap kitchen joinery contributes to the coastal feel, while additional island pendants provide a gentle contrast above the grey bench top.
Individuality continues to flourish throughout. Black powder coated steel energises the kitchen island in a frame support and also reappears in a custom joinery door creating a room divide and retreat with fire. Particular attention stands out in specified handles. All internal door hardware features sturdy polished aged brass, while in the bedrooms wardrobes highlight oversized round American white oak knobs. Close at hand in the children’s retreat leather handles compliment the joinery as designer’s choice.
The bathrooms are simple yet sophisticated, drawing on oak and white tile detailing with accompanying black tapware. Lighting creates a warm elegance while the rawness of the joinery adds a coastal flavour. Oak mirrors all in-a-line add a stylish statement to the guest bathroom and marry with timber hooks for hanging. The children’s bathroom has a statement trough basin positioned at the right height for all to cluster around, while feature timber wall hangers expertly take care of the towels.
This house really is one of stylish and simple coastal sophistication. The shiplap cladding adds a taste of the ocean, and the consistent use of white, grey and timber creates calm and inviting spaces. Honest and well-considered design illuminates throughout to generate one enviable beachside home.
