1. Wings: Termites go through various stages in their life cycle, including a winged reproductive phase when they are called “alates.” After the reproductive phase is complete, both male and female termites will shed their wings which will result in copious amounts of tiny insect wings near window sills and doors.
2. Wood Damage: Termites love munching on wood, and sometimes, damaged wood can be the first sign of trouble. If you notice damage, promptly check for termites. Remember that the damage you see may be only the beginning which is why a thorough inspection is crucial.
3. Buckling Floors and Ceilings: They may look like water damage, but buckling floors and ceilings can also be a sign of termite infestation.
4. Random Dirt: This is called “earthen packing” and can be found near or around your home’s foundation. It will generally look like dirt or mud, but is actually the byproduct of termite infestation.
5. Visible Damage: Wood can rot, and will do so if it is not maintained. However, if you see bits of wood “missing” at an unusual rate or despite good care, it is time to suspect termites. Holes in the wood can be another potential sign of burrowing pests.
