Contemporary bathrooms are often white or grey. The days of avocado or pampas bathroom suites are long gone and today’s consumers crave modern white fixtures and fittings, underfloor heating, and stylish metro tiles. Often, colour is an afterthought, introduced to add interest in an otherwise sterile space.
There is nothing wrong with a white or grey bathroom. Indeed, if your bathroom is tiny, white is a useful way of making the room look and feel more spacious. But, if you dislike the sterility of floor to ceiling white, there are many ways to use colour to achieve a stunning contemporary look.

Greenery
The Pantone Colour of the Year for 2017 is Greenery. Green is an excellent colour for bathrooms. It creates a sense of the outdoors inside, making the room feel fresh and revitalised. It also looks amazing when juxtaposed against white ceramic sanitary ware. Stick to a white theme, but paint the walls a rich, verdant green. Hanging baskets filled with ferns and pots of succulents are a nice touch. If you want to add some pizazz to your bathroom, throw in a few red accessories for extra zing.
Black and White
A monochrome colour scheme is enduringly popular. Black and white works well in contemporary bathrooms as well as traditional decorative schemes. Use black metro tiles against white sanitary ware, or mix and match black bathroom tiles to create a geometric design on the floor or walls. For extra colour, pick a bold colour for your towels and window blind. The end result will be stylish and very contemporary.
Pale Blue-Grey
For a Scandinavian feel, go with pale blue-grey. Soft greys and pale blues are very on-trend at the moment. Bathrooms are supposed to feel relaxing. Nothing beats a soak in the bath at the end of a long day, so what better way to foster a sense of calm than to lie in the hot water, staring at a soft blue-grey wall. Gold is a lovely accent colour if you want to add a touch of warmth to your bathroom. Gilt mirrors or yellow-gold towels will enhance the coolness of the blue-grey walls.
Spa Colours
If you want to create a spa feel in your bathroom, use hot, bold colours reminiscent of a Turkish steam room. Reds, oranges, golds and hot pinks are all perfect. As long as you stick with white fixtures and fittings and white tiles, you should end up with a stylish, contemporary bathroom. Introduce thick, fluffy towel bales and lots of scented candles for a luxurious feel.
Metallic
Metallic colour schemes are hot right now. For the ultimate in contemporary luxury, invest in a copper slipper bath, but if that isn’t within your budget, look for metallic decorative mosaic tiles and copper accessories. Paint the walls a rich shade of crimson red or purple and it will feel as if you have stepped into an upmarket hotel.
Devising a colour scheme for a bathroom needn’t be a headache. Almost any colour will do – it all depends on how daring you feel!
