If you look past all of the leopard print on the high street right now, you’ll notice another trend that is unavoidable: corduroy. This ’70s-style ridged fabric has long been the uniform of academics, but this autumn, it’s been given a fashion makeover.

Miuccia Prada’s autumn/winter 2018 men’s collection saw models wearing brown cords with chunky patterned jumpers and a string of shells around their necks (an outfit you probably would have spotted at the Oxford University library back in 1979). However, stiff cords have now been adopted by street stylers.

Cords have been given a makeover this year, as you’ll find them in every colour and style imaginable. On the top of our editors’ wish lists is a pair of green straight-leg Isabel Marant trousers, a powder-blue single-breasted blazer from H&M and a belted jumpsuit from M.i.h Jeans. Keep scrolling to see how the street-style crowd is wearing cords, and then shop our edit of the 17 best cord pieces around.

Style Notes: This cord skirt suit looks amazing in this rich green colour.
Style Notes: Hanna Steffanson’s navy trouser suit is from Arket. We love how she stuck to a strict navy-and-brown colour palette.
Style Notes: Emili Sindlev sticks to the country theme with a brown cord jacket and bird-printed scarf.
Style Notes: We love these two spins on the cord trend. The green cord bomber and navy cord jumpsuit just look so cool together.
