12 Shades of Christmas Day Three | DIY Snowflake Patterned Christmas Bauble

One of my most vivid childhood memories is the night we put the Christmas tree up. Twelve days before the 25th we take out the Christmas decorations box and fishing through the tangled fairy lights (how does that happen every year?) and strands of tinsel, picking out our old, battered baubles. I remember they were purple and red in hearts, spheres and oval shapes. These were 80’s classics and we put them up on our tree for many years. But with each year they lost a little of their lustre… quite literally until one sad Christmas it was time to say goodbye.

Now had known then what I know now those baubles would be living on – I’m sure of it! Sometimes sentimental value can live on inside, even if we do spruce up the outside. This tutorial will modernise the colour palette of your tree decorations while keeping all the memories stored on the inside. And all you need are a few Dulux tester paint pots and the aptly named puffy paint which is available in craft stores and online.

1. Clean the baubles (they are probably a bit dusty) and dry thoroughly. With your glue ready decide on a pattern to create on the bauble surface. I use cross stitch snowflake patterns as they are arranged as a grid which is easily replicated with our paint dots. Just search ‘cross stitch snowflake pattern’ on Pinterest to easily find them.

2 . Start squeezing out small dots of paint onto the surface of the bauble. You can practice with a dot or two on paper first to get the hang of it. Begin at the middle of the pattern and work your way out. Take care to keep the lines straight as you work around the curve of the bauble as this will accentuate your design.

3. Once the pattern is finished leave the dots to dry for at least 4 hours. Preferably overnight.

4. Shake and open your tester. Coat the bauble in a layer of paint including the top. This will give it a modern ‘dipped’ look.

5 . Wait for the paint to dry and paint on another coat until you have a smooth even surface. You can use a fine sandpaper to even out any rough areas.

6. When your baubles are dry re-string with fresh cotton cord and hang on your tree.
